Trauma Therapy

Trauma Therapy

Did you witness or experience a traumatic event/series of events? Since then, have you found yourself replaying the traumatic experience over and over in your mind? Have you felt constantly on-edge and very aware of the world around you? Have you withdrawn from others and began avoiding certain reminders of the traumatic experience? Have you found yourself becoming angry or irritated with others more easily than before? If you answered yes, then you may be struggling with a trauma-related disorder, such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).  We at Capitol Psychological Assessment can help.

What are trauma-related disorders?

Trauma disorders, such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Trauma disorders can cause significant distress and negatively affect a person’s ability to function. Some signs or symptoms that a person may be suffering from a trauma related disorder include but are not necessarily limited to: intrusive memories such as flashbacks or nightmares; avoiding people, places, or situations that remind the individual of the traumatic event; being on high alert or easily startled; negative changes in mood; feeling sad, detached, or hopeless; feelings of guilt, shame, or self-blame; physical symptoms such as stomach problems with chronic pain; increased use of substances. It is important to seek professional help with these symptoms if they are interfering with daily activities or are causing significant distress.

What can therapy do for me?

Providers at Capitol Psychological Assessment implement trauma-informed care, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Trauma-informed care involves creating a safe and supportive environment where individuals feel comfortable sharing their experiences and receiving care. Our providers establish trust with patients by being transparent, respectful, and reliable. They empower patients to make informed decisions about their care and treatment and work collaboratively with patients when making decisions about their care. Our providers work with patients to develop a sense of control and confidence in their ability to manage their own lives. Our providers are sensitive to cultural, historical, and gender considerations, recognizing the impact these areas have on trauma and individuals. Our trauma-informed approach promotes healing and recovery and helps individuals address the negative effects of trauma, including processing their traumatic memories, overcoming problematic thoughts and behaviors, and developing effective coping and interpersonal skills. Our providers can help with referrals to a psychiatrist and may work closely with your medical providers upon request.

Finding the right fit

Psychotherapy is a collaborative process that involves commitment and the building of trust. For therapy to be the most successful, we ask our clients to take an active role in treatment and be as honest and forthcoming as possible. This can be a very challenging task, so in return we must offer a safe, supportive environment and a psychologist that makes clients feel comfortable to openly share. Capitol Psychological Assessment has over 10 licensed psychologists with various specialties, backgrounds, and therapeutic approaches. This diversity in our staff allows us to fit clients with a provider that best meets their needs.
